Several unique terms and phrases describe the features of hardware we review on this site, some easier to grasp than others. This list briefly defines terms relevant to Multimedia PC.
Ratings ProcessorWe looked at the type of processor as well as the GHz and front bus speed. Those that offer dual processors are better at running multiple applications and faired better in our review. Memory Multimedia requires a large amount memory, both in the hard drive and in RAM. Since many people store their digital photos and video on their hard drive, the best computers offer at least a 500GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. Multimedia Features Computers configured for multimedia should include a DVD and CD burner/reader as well as surround sound ability and ports for connecting video, peripherals and media devices. Price/Value We rated the quality of the system compared to the price. So, a computer over $2000 that offers similar features to a $1500 product would not score as high in economical value. Support/Warranty Setting up a system can get tricky for a computer novice, so it is helpful if the manufacturer offers exceptional customer service in the form of technical support by telephone, email and chat. The company should also publish online help such as FAQs, tutorials, drivers and downloads. We also liked the fact that many companies offer free shipping and warrantees. Processor Type CPU (GHz)Gigahertz is a frequency measurement of billions of cycles per second. So if a processor runs at 2 GHz, it can handle 2 billion cycles per second. Gaming and multimedia processors ought to run at over 3 GHz. MEMORY RAM (MB)Random Access Memory Hard Drive (GB) This device reads and writes data onto a hard disk. VIDEO & AUDIO Graphics Card TypeOften referred to as video cards, converts visual information into data that can be input into a display medium (monitor). Multimedia computers should have a good graphics card with at least 256 MB and a NVIDIA GeForce of 7300 or higher or a high–end ATI Radeon. Card Memory (MB) Megabyte or a million bytes. Surround Sound Configuration Most multimedia systems can support surround sound, often 5.1, which is five speakers and one subwoofer. I/O DEVICES CD ROMReads CDs. DVD ROM Can read DVDs. Media Card Reader Media card readers come in different configurations, often 9–in–1, which means it has the ability to read nine different types of media sticks. Flat Panel Monitor Currently, the most popular monitor, it is flat in the front and is thin. Software XP HomeAn operating system designed for home use. Security Anti–virus, anti–spyware, filtering or pop–up blocking software. Multimedia Features Remote ControlA wireless device used for remote access. TV Tuner Computer with TV tuners can display television signals and record your favorite programs as well. A computer with two tuners can display one channel while recording another. FM Tuner Can pick up FM signals and play radio. Speakers (2) System, as packaged, comes with speakers. Subwoofer A subwoofer comes with the speakers. Technical Help/Support Parts & Labor Warranty (YR)Most companies offer at least a one–year warranty; it is nice if they offer a longer warranty at no extra charge. Telephone Support Manufacturer or distributor provides free or paid telephone technical support. Email Support Website publishes an email address or provides an email form for technical inquires. Chat Support Instant support offered real–time through an IM or chat–like service.
