We looked at the 17 inch iMac from Apple. There are two 17 inch versions available; we chose to evaluate the 2.0GHz version because it offers more RAM and a better graphics card. This computer is an integrated, desktop type system, which means that the CPU is incorporated into the monitor case and does not require a tower.
This iMac comes with a GB of RAM, which should be sufficient to run Mac software. In terms of software, this system is loaded with iLife that has photo, video and music organizing and editing elements. It also comes with basic production and time management tools. For the price this is a pretty good system, it comes complete with a monitor, cpu, keyboard, mouse, speakers and software. In addition it also has a built in camera with an audio recorder and Bluetooth.
Considering that we were evaluating multimedia computers, we would like to see a little more storage. Many people can use up 160 GB in music and video rather quickly, so if you like this computer you may want to increase the hard drive to 250 GB for $75.
Another element of this system that concerns us is the processor. Without opening up the computer and digging out the processor, we can not be sure as to exactly which Intel processor this system includes. Mac reports that this particular model runs at 2.0 GHz, but if you go to the Intel site and research their Core 2 Duo processors, you will notice that they do not list a model that runs at that speed.
For less than $1200, you can pull this Mac out of its box and be ready to compute in minutes. In addition, since you don’t have to worry about trying to run Vista you should be able to get by with 1024 MB of RAM. But we would recommend that you increase the hard drive a bit if you plan to store media and increase the RAM to 2 GB if you desire to perform a lot of video editing.
